The Day Before the First Day

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” – John Lennon

A few weeks ago these lyrics from “Beautiful Boy” were quoted to me by a friend as I wavered between wanting to resume my career and wanting to staying home with my 9-month-old son.  They were the precise words — the perfect words — I needed to hear at that moment.

I was spending too much time agonizing over my paused career while staying home with my son.  I often was only half-present as we would play with the same toys or practice the same words over and over on the living room floor.  During any of the tasks I could do by rote, my mind would wander.  And those well-timed Lennon lyrics snapped me to attention.

For the few weeks since I have made sure to be fully present while caring for my son.  I soak in his laughter, his sweet baby skin, and even his tantrums with greater joy than ever before.

I’m no longer making other plans.  I’ve made the mindful decision to resume my career, and the first day at my new job is tomorrow.  My son’s first day at daycare is tomorrow as well.  Each time I got choked up today thinking about tomorrow, I forced my mind back to the present to enjoy my own beautiful boy.
